17 Best Stud Finder App for Any Handyman (Android and iOS)
Most people need to find wall studs when they want to hang a flat-screen TV, a very heavy painting, mirror or wall hanging.
It is more secure to attach the item to the stud, which is a piece of wood behind the drywall that frames the wall.
Most studs are placed 16 or 24 inches apart.
Once you find the first one, it shouldn’t be too hard to find the rest, usually.
However, finding that first stud on a wall that is completely flat and gives no indication where the studs might be can be quite difficult and frustrating.
Without knocking holes in your wall to find that first stud, Stud finders work in a few different ways.
Most are simply metal detectors that find the metal nails used to hang your wall’s sheetrock.
Others, like the Walabot listed below, have even better technology and actually use different ways to “see” behind the wall.
Allowing you to see not just metal objects, but even things like PVC pipes, covered electrical boxes and so on that couldn’t be found with ordinary metal detecting apps, the Walabot has a well-deserved nickname of the ‘X-ray wall scanner’.
Physical stud finders are either magnetic or electric but with all the advances in technology, you can stick to traditional methods or you can just use a stud finder app and your smartphone instead (Less Hassle!)
Best stud finder app for Android:
1. Walabot DIY
✅ Walabot DIY is the Best Stud Finder App & most popular with our readers.
Walabot DIY is by far the very best stud finder app available today.
It is easy to use and will save you a tone of time finding studs, piping or other objects behind a wall.
This particular app is the ONLY app listed that is not free and yes, that makes it different in the way that this app does a LOT more than just find studs.
Many times the construction involves tearing into walls with only some idea of what lies inside.
Well, Walabot promises the DIY can alleviate this problem.
The DIY is supposedly able to see through materials and into walls up to four inches thick. When I saw this device at first my immediate thought was “pure snake oil” but I agreed to see if the Walabot DIY really does work magic. So, let’s see how it goes…
The Walabot DIY is engineered to connect to your smartphone and “see” inside the walls of your house, office or any surface covered in drywall or concrete. The sensor array can penetrate up to 4 inches into walls and locate studs, plastic and metal pipes, and electrical wiring. The Walabot DIY app gives you a visual representation of what it senses behind your drywall, tile, and/or concrete board.
What’s in the box?
- Walabot DIY sensor
- micro USB cable
- Magnetic disc
- Protective plastic sheet
The Walabot DIY sensor and electronics are encased in black plastic and is approximately the footprint of today’s larger smartphones but is about twice as thick.
Its form factor is very similar to a standard backup battery.
The back of the DIY sensor has a circular magnet embedded into the plastic enabling the device to stick to the back of your Android smartphone. The magnetic connection between the sensor and metal disc could be stronger.
There is a micro USB and a USB 3.0 engineered into one of the bottom ends of the DIY device.
Oddly enough, the only operational port on the DIY device is the micro USB port of the USB 3.0 port. Your smartphone powers the DIY via micro USB cable. Once connected, the Walabot smartphone app walks you through the setup process the first time you use it.
Currently, the list of compatible devices is somewhat limited, as of the writing of this review, the DIY only works with Android smartphones running Lollipop, Marshmallow, and Nougat with micro USB.
Though as noted on the Walabot website the Note 7 and LG G4 are not supported.
Based on their website, it appears Walabot is working on a solution for iPhone users.
Along with an iOS app, it would most likely require a specialized micro USB to Lightning cable to power the unit and communicate with your iPhone.
The Walabot app not only finds studs but pretty much anything that’s behind your walls, including wood and PVC.
Meaning, not just metallic objects like the rest of the listed apps do.
Other stud finders beep to alert you that an object has been found behind your walls without showing you whether the object is a stud to drill into or a pipe or wire to avoid?
Walabot can afford to be constantly updated and made better because it is a paid app but that’s okay because this thing is like an x-ray machine! This is the reason we have this as number 1 on our best stud finder app.
